Stow Citizens For Responsible Government

UPDATE for Wyoga Lake Storm Water Meeting

by SCRGadmin on Jan.17, 2010, under City Council, Our City

In a previous post we notified you of the picnic/meeting held by City Council person Council Member Mary Bednar for the residents of Wyoga Lake.  Storm water drainage was the principle subject.  We let you know that a resident of the city (from a different area of the city) was threatened with arrest if  he remained at the meeting.

We felt that his removal was a violation of the “sunshine law” (the Ohio Open Records Act).  We also felt that this meeting was in violation of the law that states that City Council meetings must be held in Council Chambers in City Hall.  We also noted that since four members of Council were present at the meeting (Mary Bednar, Ron Alexander, Janet D’Antonio and Sara Drew)  this constituted a legal Council meeting.  Why hasn’t our city Law Director addressed this blatant violation of the Ohio Open Records Act.  Why hasn’t he enforced the law of the city dictating where meetings must be held?

You can see the invitation that started the whole mess right here.

That previous post noting these violations can be found here

I cannot be sure why the Law Director of Stow has not addressed this violation of the Ohio Open Records Act, although it is question the man sure should answer.

But there is a general trend that could explain such behavior, and it is this.

Civics in America had degraded to the point where too often those in government employ & in public office look out for themselves first and foremost. As a result, far too much information is kept from the public. A lot of this is due to the public’s own apathy but a good bit of it is due to those in power not wanting public interference in their grand schemes. This is true at ALL levels of government.

To see what I mean, just look at the health care nonesense that’s going on in Washington. In spite of repeated promises for transparancy on the campaign trail, Obama and his merry band of Democrats are currently hammering out the details of their radical take over of one-sixth of the U.S. economy behind guarded closed doors, cutting deal after deal with special interest groups all to the detriment of the common good.

Janet D’antonio was cautioned before the meeting started by a former city council president that the four council members who were staying for the meeting were in violation of the state’s sunshine law and the city’s charter. Janet D’Antonio who served for many years as the council president herself just said what are you going to do taddle on me. Ron Alexander the current president of council and Mary Bednar the current vice president were also aware they were violating the law. Sara Drew who had served two years on council should have known she was violating the law as well also attended the meeting.

It seems the rules don’t apply for some people because the law director is aware of the violation but chooses not to address it. How many other rules does the council leadership decide don’t apply to them?

I’m not sure the Law Director could direct his way out of a paper bag with one end open.
